Spiroxidil: A Prescribed Treatment for Women with Thinning Hair
Spiroxidil combines two treatments with strong clinical evidence behind them. It is available at our clinic following a consultation with one of our hair loss doctors.
What is Spiroxidil?
Spiroxidil is the name we use for our prescribed combination of spironolactone and minoxidil. Both medications have been used in the treatment of female pattern hair loss for many years and have a substantial body of clinical evidence behind them. Together, they address hair loss from two directions at once.
Spiroxidil is a prescription-only treatment. It is not available over the counter or directly online. Patients access it through a consultation with one of our hair loss doctors, who assesses whether it is appropriate for their particular situation.
How it Works
Minoxidil and spironolactone each address a different aspect of female pattern hair loss.
Stimulates Growth
Minoxidil
Works by stimulating dormant follicles back into their growth phase. It increases blood flow to the follicle, extends the period during which hair actively grows, and over time produces measurable improvements in density. It is the only medication specifically approved by the FDA for hair loss in women.
Addresses the Cause
Spironolactone
Works on the hormonal side of the problem. Female pattern hair loss is driven in significant part by the sensitivity of hair follicles to androgens. Spironolactone reduces androgen activity at the follicle level, slowing the miniaturisation that causes progressive thinning — particularly effective where hair loss has a hormonal component, including PCOS and menopause.
Why the Combination
Better Together
Minoxidil stimulates new growth while spironolactone works to reduce the ongoing hormonal cause. This is why the combination tends to produce better long-term results than either medication alone. Each one does what the other cannot.
Evidence-Led
The Clinical Evidence
The published evidence for this combination in female pattern hair loss is substantial.
A landmark study by Professor Rodney Sinclair treated 100 women with low-dose oral minoxidil and spironolactone. After 12 months, hair shedding scores improved significantly, hair density increased, and most women showed stabilisation or measurable improvement. The authors concluded the combination was safe and effective for female pattern hair loss.
More recent research published in 2025 found that spironolactone produced a measurable additional benefit when combined with minoxidil, outperforming minoxidil alone in women with mild to moderate female pattern hair loss. This is consistent with what our doctors see in practice.
What to Expect
Treatment takes time. Hair grows slowly, and the follicles that respond need months to show visible change. The following is a realistic guide to what most women experience.
Results vary between individuals. The timeline above reflects the typical experience and is not a guarantee of outcome for any individual patient.
Is Spiroxidil Right for Me?
Spiroxidil is not suitable for everyone. Our doctors will discuss your full medical history at consultation, but there are some situations where it is not appropriate:
It is not suitable if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Spironolactone can cause harm to a developing baby.
It is not suitable if you have kidney disease or significantly reduced kidney function.
It requires careful assessment if you take medications that affect potassium levels.
It may not be appropriate if you have low blood pressure.
Our doctors will review your full history and will only prescribe Spiroxidil where it is clinically appropriate for you.
